n. [ L. troglodytae, pl., Gr. &unr_; one who creeps into holes; &unr_; a hole, cavern (fr. &unr_; to gnaw) + &unr_; enter: cf. F. troglodyte. ] 1. (Ethnol.) One of any savage race that dwells in caves, instead of constructing dwellings; a cave dweller, or cave man. Most of the primitive races of man were troglodytes. [ 1913 Webster ]
