Bevan and Truong (2003) studied the effectiveness of vetiver grass in erosion and sediment control at a bentonite mine. Field trials were conducted at Queensland, Australia. The soil was highly sodic with exchangeable sodium percentage as high as 48%. Vetiver was planted across the drains for erosion control and to trap sediment in runoff water. Results showed that vetiver hedges established easily on extremely sodic soils when adequately supplied with fertilizers and water. Although, not 10-months-old of not fully established vetiver hedges are very effective in trapping both coarse and fine sediment and have reduced visible signs of erosion.
