ต้นกำเนิดนิวตรอนแบบสปอลเลชัน, เป็นต้นกำเนิดนิวตรอนรุ่นใหม่ จัดเป็นเครื่องผลิตนิวตรอนพลังงานสูงชนิดหนึ่ง มีหลักการทำงานคือ เมื่อยิงโปรตรอนพลังงานสูง (มากกว่า 100 ล้าน อิเล็กตรอนโวลต์) เข้าไปในเป้าซึ่งเป็นธาตุหนัก เช่น แทนทาลัม ทังสเตน และยูเรเนียม จะทำให้เกิดปฏิกิริยานิวเคลียร์แบบสปอลเลชั่น และมีการปลดปล่อยนิวตรอน พร้อมทั้งอนุภาคชนิดอื่นๆ เช่นโปรตรอน และเกิดปฏิกิริยาต่อเนื่องหลั่นกันไป (cascade) ต้นกำเนิดนิวตรอนชนิดนี้ ให้นิวตรอนพลังงานเฉลี่ยประ มาณ 1 ล้านอิเล็กตรอนโวลต์ จำนวนประมาณ 10-30 เท่าของการยิงโปรตรอน 1 อนุภาค นิวตรอนที่ผลิตขึ้นนี้ สามารถนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ในงานวิจัยด้านต่างๆ ต้นกำเนิดนิวตรอนแบบ สปอลเลชันเครื่องแรกมีชื่อว่า KENSตั้งอยู่ที่สถาบัน KEK (National Laboratory for High Energy Physics) ประเทศญี่ปุ่น เริ่มใช้งานครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ.2523 สำหรับต้นกำเนิดนิวตรอนแบบสปอลเลชัน ที่ให้นิวตรอนเข้มข้นสูงสุดในปัจจุบันคือ ISIS ของ Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ประเทศอังกฤษ เริ่มเดินเครื่องในปี พ.ศ. 2527 และให้นิวตรอนฟลักซ์เฉลี่ยประมาณ 1015นิวตรอน/ ตร.ซม.-วินาที และมีฟลักซ์สูงสุดมากกว่า 40 เท่าของฟลักซ์เฉลี่ย [พลังงาน]
