(Electronics) a short wire, or a small plastic object containing such a short wire, used to optionally connect or disconnect two points in an electronic circuit, so as to include or exclude portions of the circuit and thus modify the function of the circuit. Such jumpers are much used to adapt add-on circuit boards for different conditions or functions within a computer. The contacts to which jumpers connect in commercially produced circuit boards are typically two closely spaced short stiff wires standing perpendicular to the plane of the circuit board, and the jumper has two holes with spacing identical to that of the contacts wires, so as to allow convenient insertion or removal of the jumper.
