time sharingการแบ่งกันใช้เวลาหมายถึง การใช้ทรัพยากรต่าง ๆ เช่น ตัวประมวลผล เครื่องพิมพ์ และหน่วยขับจานบันทึกในเครื่องเมนเฟรม หรือเครือข่าย ให้มีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุด โดยใช้ร่วมกันในเวลาเดียวกัน หรือมิฉะนั้นอาจใช้หมายถึงระบบการประมวลผลแบบหนึ่ง ที่ทำให้ เครื่องปลายทาง (terminal) ที่มีอยู่หลายเครื่อง สามารถแบ่งกันใช้เวลาของหน่วยประมวลผลกลางของคอมพิวเตอร์ได้ หมายถึงว่า ทำให้เครื่องสามารถทำงานได้หลาย ๆ อย่าง ในเวลาเดียวกัน หรือพูดง่าย ๆ ได้ว่า เป็นสมรรถวิสัยของเครื่องที่จะสามารถรับข้อมูลจากเครื่องปลายทางได้มากกว่า 1 เครื่องในเวลาเดียวกัน ตัวอย่างที่เห็นได้ง่าย ๆ ก็คือการถอนเงินจากตู้เงินด่วนหรือเครื่องรับจ่ายเงินอัตโนมัติ (ATM) ซึ่งก็คือเครื่องปลายทางแบบหนึ่งนั่นเอง หลายคนจะสามารถถอนเงินจากสาขาต่างกันได้พร้อม ๆ กัน ในเวลาเดียวกัน (บางทีเขียนติดกัน เป็น timesharing ก็มี)
