interpreterตัวแปลภาษาเป็นโปรแกรมตัวแปลที่อ่านคำสั่งในโปรแกรมทีละคำสั่ง (ไม่รอจนจบโปรแกรมเหมือนตัวแปลอื่น) แปลเป็นภาษาเครื่อง (machine language) แล้วปฏิบัติตามคำสั่งนั้นเลย เช่น ตัวแปลที่ใช้แปลโปรแกรมภาษาเบสิก (BASIC) การเรียนวิธีเขียนโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ที่ใช้ตัวแปลประเภทนี้ ผู้เรียนจะรู้สึกว่าง่ายและทันใจ เพราะพอใส่คำสั่งเข้าไป เครื่องก็จะรายงานได้ทันทีว่า คำสั่งนั้นถูกหรือผิด ถ้าสั่งให้ทำอะไร ก็จะทำให้เลย ข้อเสียของตัวแปลประเภทนี้ ก็คือ คอมพิวเตอร์จะไม่เก็บคำแปลไว้ หากจะต้องย้อนกลับไปทำคำสั่งนั้นอีก ก็จะต้องแปลใหม่อีกทุกครั้ง ดู compiler ประกอบ
